Killing Excel After a fastProject Error

There are times when fastProject may encounter a fatal error. In some cases (e.g. when generating an Excel report), this can lead to a hidden Excel process being left. Though usually not critical, it is advisable to kill these processes in order to avoid potential problems in the future.

In order to kill an Excel process, the user can either reboot (typically not very convenient) or use the Task Manager as follows:

  1. Close all Excel files (so the only remaining Excel processes or those left by fastProject)

    • WARNING: failure to close all Excel files may result in you killing an open Excel file and losing data

  2. Start the Task Manager by either typing "Task Manager" in the Windows search or putting the mouse over the Windows Taskbar > Right-mouse click > Task Manager

  3. Under "Background processes", look for "Microsoft Excel" (there ay be more than one process) - see image below as an example

  4. Select the Microsoft Excel process then click End Task

  5. Repeat 3 and 4 for each "Microsoft Excel" process
